Design of Biologically Derived Capsules for Separations, Reaction Compartmentalization, and Drug Delivery

Vault-like particle reconstruction

Lipid vesicles, which are submicron-diameter, surfactant bilayer membrane capsules, have been engineered for the selective recovery of toxic heavy metal ions, such as Cd2+ and Pb2+, from dilute aqueous solution.  We also have shown that vesicles can be used for the production of monodisperse, crystalline semiconductor nanoparticles.  Recently, we commenced study of submicron protein capsules called vaults in collaboration with UCLA chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists and material scientists.  These vaults may also be useful for nanoparticle synthesis as well as for drug delivery.
